Holiday Highlights

Embark on an enchanting journey commencing amidst the splendid temples of Angkor, followed by boarding the beautifully intimate Victoria Mekong ship for a four-night cruise along the Mekong River. Engage in shore excursions meticulously crafted to provide an authentic insight into local life. Transition into Vietnam to uncover its myriad treasures, exploring the lively Saigon, the quaint charm of Hoi An, and the historical allure of Hanoi. Conclude your adventure by sailing through the captivating waters of Halong Bay.

Day 1-2: Arrive Siem Reap

Siem Reap, which means 'the defeat of Siam,' reflects the historical rivalry between Cambodia and Thailand. Following the French acquisition of Angkor from Siam, Siem Reap has transformed from a modest village into a sought-after tourist destination, largely due to its close proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat.

Day 3: Angkor

In the morning, we explore the city of Angkor Thom, constructed by Jayavarman VII as part of his restoration efforts for the Angkorian Empire in the late 12th century. Notable attractions in this area include the mysterious Bayon, the Elephant Terrace, and the Terrace of the Leper King. One particularly evocative ruin is the monastery temple of Ta Prohm, nestled in a jungle maze just outside Angkor Thom.

After a satisfying lunch, the afternoon is dedicated to the captivating temple complex of Angkor Wat, renowned as the world's largest religious monument. Predating the city of Angkor Thom, Angkor Wat is considered Cambodia's spiritual heart. Later in the day, we return to Angkor Thom to witness the sunset from its moat, accompanied by a refreshing drink.

Day 4: Tonle Sap

Begin your day by exploring a quaint rural village, where you'll gain insights into the personal lives of Khmer families and learn about local dynamics and daily routines. Following lunch, venture to Tonle Sap lake to observe how local communities construct floating homes on the water. Conclude the day with dinner back in Siem Reap, keeping in mind that the specific village visited may vary based on water levels during your visit.

Day 5: Phnom Penh

Leave Siem Reap and take a one-hour flight to Phnom Penh. This captivating capital, situated at the confluence of the Mekong and Bassac River, showcases a delightful blend of Khmer, French, and contemporary architectural styles. Hop onto a cyclo to explore Wat Phnom and the elaborate Cambodian Royal Palace, including the luxurious Silver Pagoda, before enjoying dinner. Afterward, settle into your hotel for an overnight stay in the city.

Day 6: Tuol Sleng, The Killing Fields & Victoria Mekong

Contemplate the city's history by touring the Tuol Sleng Museum (formerly S-21 Prison) and the Killing Fields. These sites unravel the tragic tale of the Khmer people during the harsh Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s. While these visits are educational, be prepared for the potential emotional impact, and you'll have time for individual exploration.

Following lunch, make your way to the ship's embarkation point in Phnom Penh, typically located at Sisowath Quay. Bid farewell to your National Escort, embark on the Victoria Mekong, your river cruise ship for the upcoming four nights. Unwind with a sundown drink, relish a dance performance, and partake in a welcome briefing in the panoramic restaurant before dinner.

Day 7: Into Vietnam

This morning marks the departure of the Victoria Mekong, offering a variety of onboard activities. Alternatively, you can choose to unwind on the sun deck or by the pool. As the ship cruises into Vietnam around lunchtime, it will anchor near Tan Chau. Your border crossing formalities will be managed on your behalf during lunch.

Take a tender ashore to explore a Taoist temple and a vibrant market, witnessing the captivating stilt houses. Return to the ship in time for an exhilarating lion dance performance on the Sky Deck, coinciding with the sunset.

Day 8: Phu Tan & Tiger Island

Following breakfast, use a tender to reach Phu Tan, where you'll explore a craft village renowned for its artisanal clay stoves. Head back to the ship for lunch in the panoramic Claypot Restaurant, enjoying the scenic views as the vessel cruises downstream. In the afternoon, the ship will anchor at Tiger Island, providing an opportunity to go ashore and discover local industries, including ceramics and incense making. Return to the ship in time for a cocktail competition and the evening's entertainment.

Day 9: Long Xuyen & Dinh Yen

Arrive at Long Xuyen and use a tender to explore the lively floating market. Take a break in town to tour the An Giang Museum, where exhibits showcase ancient local cultures, before returning to the Victoria Mekong. Relish a revitalizing lunch as the ship progresses downstream to Dinh Yen. Here, witness villagers skillfully weaving vibrant straw mats and visit a family known for their expertise in producing beancurd (also known as tofu skin, similar to Japanese yuba). In the evening, the ship proceeds to Can Tho, the vibrant hub of the Mekong Delta.

Day 10: Can Tho - Saigon

Say goodbye to the Victoria Mekong and travel by road from Can Tho to Saigon, making a stop in Cai Be for a delightful local lunch along the way. Connect with your National Escort, who will lead you through the exploration of Vietnam's diverse offerings.

Tonight, dine at Noir, a restaurant dedicated to supporting Saigon's visually impaired community, providing a unique sensory 'dining in the dark' experience.

Day 11: Cu Chi & Saigon

In the morning, explore the intriguing Cu Chi Tunnels to delve into the history of the Viet Cong and their guerrilla tactics during the Vietnam War. The sightseeing experience involves a two-hour walk on wide but uneven paths through the forest, where you'll encounter reconstructed bamboo traps, Viet Cong kitchens, and tunnel entrances.

For those interested, there is an option to spend a few minutes underground, taking a short, crouched walk through a section of the tunnel network that has been slightly enlarged for visitor safety.

On the way back to Saigon, stop for lunch at an organic farm. Upon returning to the city, immerse yourself in its captivating blend of local culture and colonial influences. Visit iconic landmarks such as Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office, the Reunification Palace, and the poignant War Remnants Museum. The museum visit is emotionally charged, and you'll have time to explore independently.

Day 12: Saigon – Hoi An

Catch a 1 hour and 20-minute flight from Saigon to Danang, followed by a 45-minute transfer through the scenic countryside to reach the captivating town of Hoi An. Embark on a walking tour of the Old Town, exploring landmarks such as the Chua Ong Chinese Pagoda, a 200-year-old merchant house, and the breathtaking Japanese Covered Bridge. With its delightful yellow structures and vibrant silk lanterns, strolling through this historic town creates a sensation of stepping back in time.

Day 13: Tra Que Village

Venture into the serene countryside of Hoi An to visit an organic farming community. Immerse yourself in the verdant landscapes, take leisurely strolls through the gardens to witness farmers in action, and even try your hand at the techniques they use. The afternoon is yours to spend at your leisure—whether you choose to unwind at the beach or explore the charming shops and boutiques in the Old Town.

Day 14-15: Hanoi

Following breakfast, transport to Danang and board a 1-hour and 20-minute flight to the delightful city of Hanoi. In the afternoon, explore the peaceful Temple of Literature, Hanoi's inaugural university. Afterward, embark on a cyclo tour through the Old Quarter of Hanoi. Each cyclo, or rickshaw, accommodates one passenger and is steered by a cyclist behind the carriage. Conclude your ride with a chance to savor some 'egg coffee,' a local specialty.

Day 16-17: Halong Bay

Embark on a 2.5-hour drive from Hanoi to Halong Bay, where an overnight cruise will take you to the remote corners of this renowned and stunning bay by boat. Indulge in lunch onboard as you sail into the bay, pausing to anchor for an afternoon filled with activities like kayaking, swimming, or unwinding on an island beach (dependent on local weather conditions). Explore the islands, possibly including visits to underground caves that involve ascending and descending steps both inside and outside the caves.

Wrap up the day on the deck with a drink in hand, observing the sunset, followed by a freshly prepared dinner before retiring to your cabin for the night.
